In Hanbali Madhab there are 2 opinions when it comes to leather:
- one should avoid praying with leather even if it is not from pig and even bought in a Muslim country. This is the mu`tamad position of the School. Thus, if possible one should take of leather items like a wallet or a bell before praying.
- The second opinion of the Hanbali School is, that one can pray with leather items as long it is no pigskin. This is not the mu`tamad position of the Hanabilah but valid and perfeclty fine to follow for a Hanbali.
Did I understand this correctly?

Correct. Although, the second strong view in the school says that the leather must be from an animal that is pure when alive, such as sheep etc. Then there is a third opinion which is what you mentioned above, and that is also fine to follow since it is the mufta bihi in the Hanafi madhhab and chosen by some of the Hanabilah.
